Stop by for a meal, a pint and live music with Ryan Burns!
Chicago based songwriter Ryan Burns draws inspiration from the rich traditions of folk music around the Midwest and blends them with a wide array of influences pulled from poetry, fine art, and his study of ethnomusicology at UIUC. What transpires is a vibrant set of songs that take audiences on a journey, reminiscent of Glen Hansard, Jeff Tweedy, and Lord Huron.
The lyrics can be introspective and observational, exploring the world in all its intimacy, joy, and sorrow, but also cutting and political with songs about unions, housing, and the plight of refugees. He combines intricate guitar and banjo work with shifting arrangements and his soulful voice to make a whole that can be alternately driving and soothing.
Since 2019, Ryan has released several EPs and a full-length album, building a loyal fan base in Chicago and throughout the Midwest. He has also performed at some of the city's most iconic music venues, including the Metro, Beat Kitchen, and The Hideout. Ryan's live shows, accompanied by his band, The Vocal Ghosts, blend the raw energy of a Midwest alt-country show with the intimate storytelling you might hear in a songwriter round in Nashville.
In addition to his own music, Ryan also plays with the Australian singer-songwriter Tom West, and Chicago bands Distant Brothers, Cat Mullins and the Holy Lonesome, and Musichigan.
With his unique sound and powerful message, Ryan Burns is poised to make a big impact on the Chicago folk scene and beyond.
