July: Recovering your Human Be-ing: Have you become a human Do-ing, running in 20 different directions, stressed, physically tense, unable to unwind and really relax? Do you notice that as you are “relaxing” watching TV that your shoulder are up to your ears, your body is tensed ups? This session will introduce you to a very simple way to truly unwind using deep relaxation techniques and return to your life as a human being. Years of research has shown that deep relaxation changes one’s genetic expression in a positive ways and they are better able to cope with stress. This session is grounded on research from Dr. Herbert Benson and Harvard University and the Benson Henry Institute for Mind Body Medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital and the research done by Dr. John Stuart Reid
August: Deep relaxation and sound for overall wellness: Why experience and learn deep relaxation? New research shows that deep relaxation may help ward off disease by making people less susceptible to viruses by turning off the flight-fight-freeze stress response that negatively impacts the immune system. By turning off the stress response and activating the parasympathetic nervous system, deep relaxation can strength the immune system and produce a host of other medically valuable physiological changes according to findings from the Harvard University Medical School and the work of Dr. Herbert Benson.
September: Deep relaxation for dealing with difficult times: There are many positive psychological effects when we relieve stress and mental tension: greater access to intuition, increased energy, improved concentration, decrease in irritability and anger, decrease in mental chatter and increased feelings of well-being. This session will combine sound healing instruments and deep relaxation techniques help decrease the psychological effects of stress, especially during these challenging times.
October: Deep Relaxation for Chronic Pain: People are sometimes told that their pain is “chronic” and that they “will just have to live with it, there is nothing that can be done” and given little information on how they are supposed to “live with it” or what to do. Science really doesn’t have a clear-cut understanding of how pain works. Because pain and stress have similar effects on the body, new research clearly shows that, as a complimentary approach, deep relaxation has the ability to decrease pain. Clinical studies also show that relaxation techniques reduce the perception of pain. Studies have also found that relaxation practices, such as deep breathing, progressive relaxation, and visualization enhanced the immune response among breast cancer patients. Combing sound healing instruments, imagery and breathwork, we will focus on learning a natural way toward pain relief.
Nov: Deep Relaxation for Coping with Daily Frustrations and Irritations: Constant feelings of frustration and irritation triggers the brain’s flight or flight response: the adrenal glands flood the body with stress hormones, the brain shunts blood away from the gut and towards the large muscles, heart rate and blood pressure and respiration increase, the body temperature rises and the skin perspires. The mind is sharpened and focused. Deep relaxation skills help turn off the flight/fight response, decrease the stress hormones and restore a sense of calm and peace. Combing sound healing instruments, imagery and breathwork, we will focus on learning a natural way toward turning off this part of the stress response.
Dec: Deep Relaxation for the Holidays: The holidays are stressful for many: increased demands, time constraints, feeling rushed, living in a society that stresses increased consumerism resulting in financial stress, increased obligations, spending time with extended family and the list of demands and expectations goes on. This stress can appear as a headache, irritability, anxiety, feeling “blue”, overeating, insomnia, chronic tension, increase in chronic pain and feeling exhausted. Gift yourself a break from this hectic time and let go of the tension while you listen to calming sound healing instruments, imagery and do simple breathwork to gift yourself the peace inside of the holidays.
