It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Ian Douglas Goldstein, 55, of Riverside, California, on March 22, 2025. Ian leaves behind a legacy of love, kindness, and dedication. He is survived by his beloved wife, Julie Reese, and their cherished kids, Aspen and Bree. He is also survived by his parents, Deborah and Barry Berger, his sister, Carrie Berger, and her son, Logan. Ian was preceded in death by his sister, Ellen Schmitt, who remains forever in the hearts of those who loved her.
Ian was born on January 8, 1970, in Brooklyn, New York. He graduated from Edward R. Murrow High School and later pursued a degree in Family Consumer Studies from Gallaudet University, graduating in 1996. His passion for culinary arts led him to the California Culinary Academy in San Francisco, where he earned his degree in Culinary Arts in 1998.
Ian’s career as a culinary instructor at California School for the Deaf – Riverside (CSDR), where he worked since 2008, was marked by his unwavering dedication and exceptional patience. His students often spoke of his nurturing spirit, his meticulous guidance, and the way he made the art of cooking come alive for them. He was a gifted chef, always eager to share his culinary skills with friends and family.
Outside of the kitchen, Ian had a passion for travel, and one of his greatest joys was exploring new places with his family. He loved traveling with his kids, Aspen and Bree, creating lasting memories and introducing them to new cultures and experiences. For Ian, travel wasn’t just about the destinations—it was about the shared moments, the adventures, and the opportunity to make lasting memories with those he loved.
Ian also had a passion for anything involving a ball, from racquetball, pickleball, softball, golf, and literally anything that involves a ball. He loved to stay active playing these sports. He was hard to beat and very competitive when on the court—his intensity and focus made him a formidable opponent. Whether he was playing for fun or a little more seriously, his competitive spirit always shone through, and every match became an exciting challenge for those lucky enough to play with him.
Ian had a deep love for home remodeling, particularly anything that involved wood aesthetics or reclaimed materials. He also had an unshakable devotion to his favorite sports teams, the New York Yankees and the New York Jets—a true New Yorker at heart. Ian was known for his playful spirit when it came to sports, often giving friends and family a hard time about their teams. Whether it was friendly banter or a well-timed joke, his love for sports always brought a smile and laughter to those around him.
Ian was not only a loving husband and father but also a friend who left a profound impact on everyone he met. His warmth, kindness, and unshakeable support made him a beacon of light in the lives of his loved ones. Ian’s zest for life was contagious—he lived each day to the fullest, inspiring those around him to do the same. He encouraged us all to cherish each moment and pursue life with joy, enthusiasm, and gratitude.
Ian’s infectious spirit will be deeply missed, but his legacy of love, laughter, and inspiration will continue to live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
