Birding Eagle Meadow and Bennett Juniper

We will visit Niagara Campground and then drive to Niagara OHV campground, then proceed to Eagle Meadow and Bennet Juniper, occasionally stopping along the way to bird. This is a well-maintained forest road, passable by passenger car. There are facilities at some of the campgrounds, though they may not be open at the time of our visit.

We will be on the lookout for species such as Mountain Quail, American Goshawk, Band-tailed Pigeon, Calliope & Rufous Hummingbird, Red-breasted & Williamson's Sapsucker, Hairy, White-headed and Pileated Woodpecker, Olive-sided, Western, Dusky and Hammond’s Flycatcher, Cassin’s, Hutton’s and Warbling Vireo, Clark’s Nutcracker, Mountain Chickadee, Red-breasted and Pygmy Nuthatch, Brown Creeper, Golden-crowned Kinglet, Townsend’s Solitaire, Orange-crowned, Nashville, Yellow, Yellow-rumped, Black-throated Gray, Townsend’s, Hermit, MacGillivray’s and Wilson’s Warbler, Green-tailed Towhee, Chipping, Brewer’s, “Thick-billed” Fox, and Lincoln’s Sparrow, Western Tanager, Black-headed, Pine and Evening Grosbeak, Lazuli Bunting, Purple and Cassin’s Finch, Red Crossbill and Pine Siskin.

Bring comfortable walking shoes, a hat, sunscreen, insect repellent, water and lunch, as we will be picnicking along the way, and a jacket, as it can be chilly at the higher elevations in the morning. And don’t forget your binoculars!

Time permitting, and if anyone’s interested, we could also continue up to Sonora Pass and check out the Pacific Crest Trail.

We will return in the early evening, but those who wish to return earlier are certainly welcome to do so.
