Registration is now open for ISSP Photowalk No. 7: The Fifth Centre with Loïc Sutter and guests
📅 Saturday, 23 August, 14.15 - 18.00
📍 Meeting point - Lugažu iela tram stop
“The era of pastures, meadows and kitchen gardens is now in the past to be replaced by a contemporary urban environment conducive to a true urban lifestyle.” - from Skanste Development Agency website
‘Historical’, ‘Near’, ‘Far’ and ‘Quiet’ are the common names for the four Riga's informal centres. Although often overlooked by the tourist brochures, a Fifth Centre exists, flourishing wherever neglected by its big brothers. It’s encountered on the margins, in neglected and forgotten corners, the in-betweens of the city. Occasionally criticised and provoking weariness and contempt, it also opens up cherished spaces of freedom and refuge for humans and non-humans alike. But eventually, it has to give way when control, optimisation, and profit arrive to claim the space.
A Swiss artist staying at the ISSP Residency during the months of July and August, Loïc Sutter likes to explore, understand, and represent the urban fabric and man-made landscapes through walking and photography. During his wanderings through Riga, Loïc has developed an affection towards the Fifth Centre, and invites you to join him and a few guest urban practitioners on a walk through some of the wilder areas of the Skanste district.
The photowalk with several stops for conversations and exchange will start in Pētersala and continue to Skanste district in development. Anyone interested in urban spaces, their dynamics and possibilities is welcome to join!
