About the event

"Achieving the Impression of Light in Your Soft Pastel Paintings" with Jeannette Stutzman
n this 2-day workshop, students will study and practice the following concepts and techniques:

Relationship of light to color; the visible spectrum

The light source

Value, Hue, Saturation (chroma)

Shadow families and light families; Importance of contrast

What you see vs what you know

Simplification (shapes, values, colors)

Examples from well-known artists

Intent: the “scene” vs designing your painting

Each day, Jeannette Stutzman will give short demonstrations and then circulate to help students with their paintings. Students will start with warm-up exercises and then work from photo references. Participants should plan to bring their own photo references; Jeannette will also bring some to share.

Supply list for students to bring:

Travel easel

Range of hard and soft pastels: gather 3-6 values (light to dark) in each of the 12 colors around the color wheel (do your best). Bring what you have and we'll make it work!

Container/jar and rubbing alcohol for underpaintings or watercolors if you want

Synthetic brush for underpaintings (I like to use a bristle fan brush for this to achieve texture)

Sketch book & Note paper

Vine Charcoal

Sanded Paper: I prefer off-white and black UArt 400 or 500 grit. You can also bring PastelMat, Lux Archival, or other favorite brands. Keep in mind, we'll need light colors for underpaintings, and darker colors are optional. Bring at least 3 pieces for each day in the sizes you want to work. I recommend 9x12, 11x14 or 12x12.

Rags, handi-wipes for your hands (your preference, paper towels will be provided)

Color Wheel (12 steps): I have a laminated one from Amazon that I love! "Laminated Full Spectrum Color Wheel Circle Chart Poster Graduation from Black to white rainbow colors diagram educational reference poster dry erase wall art 12x18"

Optional: Viewfinder, and you may also want to bring less expensive papers for the exercises (watercolor, printmaking, multimedia, sketch papers all work).
