1708 Gallery’s InLight 2025: Super!Giant!Jump!Star!
October 17–18
1708 Gallery’s InLight, the annual public exhibition of contemporary art that is experienced at night, will shine a singular spotlight this fall on Super!Giant!Jump!Star!, the grand premiere of artist George Ferrandi’s multidisciplinary project: Jump!Star. In its 18th year, InLight also will feature a special outdoor performance by the Richmond Symphony, transforming Abner Clay Park into a celestial gathering of light, sound, and ceremony.
Conceived to commemorate the eventual celestial shift from Polaris, our current North Star, to our next, Jump!Star is an ongoing, international collaboration inviting communities to invent the cultural traditions that future generations can use to ritualize saying goodbye to Polaris. Over the years, these collaborations have yielded original songs, dances, and giant illuminated paper sculptures representing the stars that will eventually take Polaris’s place in the night sky.
Jump!Star was originally created and planned for an annual music festival in the Flint Hills of Kansas in June 2019. A few hours before the performance, a tornado ripped through the site, destroying most structures and canceling the event. Miraculously, the Jump!Star paper sculptures survived.
Super!Giant!Jump!Star! at 1708’s InLight will feature 12 ceremonial sculptures that will be experienced through a processional dance and as free standing sculptures. Additionally, the Richmond Symphony will join to present a free, signature Big Tent concert featuring the world premiere of composer Jherek Bischoff's original score written for Jump!Star!, along with additional works inspired by its cosmic themes. InLight will also feature performances by Mirah and Futurelove Sibanda.
Super!Giant!Jump!Star! will celebrate Richmond through new collaborations with local organizations, artists and musicians, site-specific programming, lantern-making workshops, and an all new North Star sculpture being built at 1708 this summer.
