Wine Tasting Notes for this Week:
Small Italian Vineyards
1) Cantine Madaudo Barone di Bernaj Frappato Terre Siciliane – 2023 – Sicily, Italy. 100% Frappato.
Cantine Madaudo is a true Sicilian family affair: 4th generation winemaker Rosario Madaudo works beside his father and many other family members. Together, they have transformed a small family tradition into a serious estate near Mt Etna and its warm climate & 100% volcanic soils. Organically and dry farmed, grapes picked by hand. Aged in steel 6 months. On the nose, this wine exhibits vibrant black cherry, balsamic, black pepper, and tumeric notes. Fresh & clean in style with good grip & mouthfeel as well as poise in the glass. Try with a slight chill and some homemade bruschetta - nothing better!
2) Cantina Cavesana Dogliani – 2023 – Dogliani, Piedmont, Italy. 100% Dolcetto.
Against a backdrop of snow-covered Alps, this collective of 150 small, sustainable farms focuses their efforts squarely on the Dolcetto grape, and most especially, the Dogliani DOCG. The additional altitude and an overall cooler, fresher meso-climate are utterly ideal for taut, traditional wines like this one. Sustainably and dry farmed, grapes picked by hand. Aged in concrete 6 months. Bright, vertical, and correct, this simultaneously friendly and clean wine delivers aromas of dark cherry and cherry blossom, with hints of both white and dark earth. On the palate, it is bright and vertical, with ripe, developed berry-driven fruit and a clean finish.
3) Marchetti Castro di San Silvestro Rosso Conero – 2022 – Rosso Conero, Marche, Italy. 100% Montepulciano.
Light plum and smoke grace this genteel take on the Montepulciano grape. Made from grapes grown in the shadow of Mount Conero, and just a stone’s throw from the Adriatic, this wine hails from a land of sun and sea. An everyday, affordable wine - fresh yet firm in style and perfect for easy-going evenings or summertime barbeque. A doctor of agronomy, Maurizio Marchetti is part scientist in the cellar and part artist. His wines, crafted near the Adriatic Sea, come from the mind of a true renaissance-style thinker. Organically and dry farmed, grapes picked by hand, certified vegan. Aged in Steel for 1 month. Aromas of dark cherry and plum, with woody, floral hints. Medium-bodied, with layered, dark fruit, well-integrated tannins, and a nuanced finish.
