About the event

Celebrate Mother's Day in Nature, Volunteer at Redwood Creek (Redwood City)
Honor mothers of all kind by volunteering your time in nature with Grassroots Ecology and Peninsula Open Space Trust in Redwood City!

About this Event

Join us on Mother's Day to honor mothers of all kind by volunteering with Grassroots Ecology and Peninsula Open Space Trust (POST) in the heart of downtown Redwood City. Your work will support the restoration of an ecologically rich marsh-upland transition zone. During our time together, we will use hand tools and buckets to manage invasive weeds across uneven terrain. This urban section of Redwood Creek flows into the San Francisco Bay, so we will also use trash grabbers to reduce the amount of litter persisting in the waterway.

Visit Grassroots Ecology’s Redwood Creek webpage to learn more about the ecosystem and accessibility considerations.

POST protects open space on the Peninsula and in the South Bay for the benefit of all. As a private nonprofit land trust, POST has been responsible for saving more 90,000 acres since 1977. POST works with private landowners and public agencies to connect people and nature. Visit openspacetrust.org for more information.

Waivers/Registration: All volunteers attending the workday must be registered individually and have approved the online waiver through this Eventbrite page. Youth under 18 must have their legal guardian approve the waiver on their behalf. Volunteers age 12 and under require an accompanying adult.

Parking: There is metered street parking in the area. No payment is required on Sundays. Do not park in the Kaiser Emergency Room parking lot.

Alternate Transportation: Bike racks can be found on the southwest corner of Kaiser Hospital. If you are looking at the Emergency Department lobby, the bike racks will be 150 ft to your right -- across from the yellow curb for passenger loading/unloading. The Jefferson Ave & Marshall St stop on SamTrans Route 270 is about a 6-minute walk (0.3 miles) from the meeting location. The Redwood City Transit Center is about a 12-minute walk (0.6 miles) from the meeting location.

Meeting Space: We will meet near the southeast corner of Veterans Blvd & Main St. Please allow yourself at least 15 minutes of extra arrival time to find parking and walk to the meeting space. There are no public restrooms or water fountains at the restoration site, but there are several local businesses that are within walking distance from our meeting location. Please prepare accordingly.

Prepare for Working Outdoors:

  • Reusable water bottle (filled with water)
  • Snacks, if desired
  • Long pants, long sleeves recommended
  • Sturdy closed-toed shoes that can get dirty
  • Hat/sunscreen or rain gear/boots
  • Epi-Pen or allergy medicine, if applicable
  • Plan for potential exposure to sun, prickly plants, and no on-site access to bathrooms

We will provide gloves, tools, and snacks

Event Cancellations:

We are committed to the safety of our staff and volunteers. If we must cancel a workday due to extreme weather conditions or poor air quality, a Grassroots Ecology staff person will reach out via email no later than 5:00 PM the day before this event.
