Join artist ciara anais stewart for a conversation on resistance, imperialism, and social justice, as she discusses her solo exhibition on view at Artspace from May 2-June 29. Conversation moderated by Precious Lovell.
About ciara anais stewart
ciara anais stewart (b. 1994) is a visual artist and cultural worker born and raised in Brooklyn, NY. In the last decade, she has lived and grown as an artist in North Carolina, most of that time spent in Durham. stewart earned her BA in Art, with a concentration in Studio Art from North Carolina Central University in 2021. She was Artspace’s 2024 HBCU Artist in Residence and was recently awarded a 2025 Ella Fountain Pratt Emerging Artists Grant from the Durham Arts Council. stewart’s work pulls from personal, familial, and collective Black + Latinx histories. Through portraiture, she uses figures to represent the themes of resistance and triumphs against oppression, frequently employing boxing as a motif.
About Precious Lovell
Precious Lovell is a mixed media artist, a curator and educator. Her sociocultural creative practice explores the narrative potential of cloth and clothing. She holds a Master of Art and Design in Fibers and Surface Design and a BFA in Fashion Design. A former fashion designer and Associate Professor, Precious has presented lectures on cloth and clothing of the African Diaspora at universities, museums, national and international conferences. She has been granted fellowships, international artist residencies and has traveled to 45 countries researching and collecting textiles and clothing. Based in Raleigh, North Carolina, Precious’ work has been exhibited in the US and internationally.
