Every year, we love volunteering at Rotary Youth Camp of North Florida for kids with special needs. There are 3 volunteer dates: 13 July with middle school kids, 20 July with high school kids, 27 July with high school and older. All dates are in the afternoon. Kids arrive at the camp at noon, and our first hour is just set up and preparation...please plan to arrive at NOON. You will go in the main entrance, and if you are stopped, let them know you are volunteering with SCUBA at the pool. You will see parking on the right. Volunteers are invited to stay to have dinner with the kids at 5pm, and this is a really special thing if you would like to stay. The counselors are amazing, and many have disabilities themselves. They are compassionate and well-trained. Kudos to all Rotarians involved in making this camp possible.
The kids have SO much fun, they learn a lot, and they make many new friends! We love sharing the joy of SCUBA with those who want to try it. It is a life-changing, joyful experience, and it's equally rewarding for us!
For anyone who wants to volunteer, this is a fast-paced experience in Quincy, Florida at Wallwood Boy Scout Reservation, 23 Wallwood BSA Road (the past several years it had been Defuniak Springs, so please note the new location). We would love to have at least 8-10 volunteers. We've had more than that, and everyone has always been needed! We need 2-3 people in the water with Gabrielle at all times including someone to take pictures and someone who is certified as an HSA Dive Buddy and rescue diver, plus several people poolside to help with taking pictures on land, talking to the kids, assessing their needs, fitting them for gear, etc. Please click Going then post on the event wall which of the dates you are able to volunteer. Thank you!
