This project, funded in part through a grant from the Virginia Department of Forested and supported by the Loudoun Wildlife Conservancy, is transforming an area of land from a grass-covered lot to a species-rich area that benefits wildlife and improves water quality. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, “Trees are increasingly recognized for their importance in managing runoff. Their leaf canopies help reduce erosion caused by falling rain. They also provide surface area where rainwater lands and evaporates. Roots take up water and help create conditions in the soil that promote infiltration.” The Virginia Department of Forestry encourages the creation of long-term sustained canopy cover to improve water quality across the Commonwealth through the Virginia Trees for Clean Water Program which is helping fund the Town’s mini-forest.
