In this focused, hands-on workshop, potters of all experience levels will dive into the essential art of creating and attaching handles to mugs, cups, pitchers, and other vessels.
Students are asked to bring 3–5 leather-hard pieces that are ready for handles. The class will cover a variety of techniques and design options, including pulling handles directly from the pot, extruding and shaping handles, attaching, refining, and adjusting for comfort and balance, as well as exploring stylistic choices ranging from rustic to refined.
Embellishment ideas—such as thumb rests, texture, surface detail, and creative connections—will also be discussed to help elevate each form. Whether you're perfecting your pulled handles, exploring extruded options, or simply seeking fresh inspiration to enhance your pottery, this 2-hour session offers practical guidance and creative encouragement.
Students should bring 3–5 mugs, cups, or vessels (leather-hard) ready for handles, along with any personal tools or stamps they’d like to use for embellishments.
Materials and equipment provided include clay for pulling and practice, an extruder with handle dies, slurry/slip, scoring tools, basic pottery tools, example handle styles, and inspiration boards.
Leave with new skills, fresh ideas, and beautifully handled pots!
