Connie's Bio: My quilting journey began when I wanted to make a quilt for my
children almost 50 years ago. Back then, there weren’t any quilt
shops like there are in today’s world so I used what I had on hand
to make my first quilt which consisted of blue and white sailboat
blocks put together with sashing strips made out of sheets that I cut
using scissors and cardboard templates! That quilt was used and
loved until it was literally in tatters and pieces, but was the
beginning step of my ongoing love of quilts.
After moving to Montana from Oklahoma, I was fortunate to find a
job working for the Quilt Gallery in Kalispell, Montana where I had
the opportunity to take weeklong workshops from well-known
international instructors like Rosalie Dace, Ruth McDowell, Sue
Spargo, Judy Niemeyer, Susan Carlson, Michelle Jackson, and many other teachers that the
owner brought in every year. As an employee, I was able to attend the workshops at half price
which was an amazing bonus.
Besides attending annual workshops, and working the floor at the Quilt Gallery for 17 years, I
attended classes offered by Bernina teaching me how to instruct Bernina owners how to use
their machines via the Bernina Mastery Classes. I also taught a variety of other quilt classes and
made many quilt samples for the shop. I also designed and wrote several patterns for Hoffman
Fabrics using their “Call of the Wild” panels before retiring and moving back to Oklahoma in
April of 2021.
One of the most popular classes I taught was the Vintage Truck Block of the Month by
Crabapple Hill which taught students the steps to tracing and coloring the blocks with colored
pencils, then embellishing with basic hand embroidery which gives the blocks dimension and
finish.
Coloring fabric with colored pencils is a fun technique to learn and can be used in a variety of
quilting/sewing projects. If you loved coloring as a child, you’ll enjoy this process just as much!
