Flora of the Grapevine Botanical Area

Sue Smith, president of the Prescott Native Plant Society, will be giving a talk on May 19th at 7pm regarding the Flora of the Grapevine Botanical Area. Grapevine Botanical Area was magical the first time Sue adventured into the canyon. Most of the streams in the Prescott Area are ephemeral. Grapevine Botanical Area was officially designated on November 4, 1997. Once part of a grazing allotment, this 800-acre biologically diverse riparian area contains 12 perennial springs and supports a unique variety of plants and animals including threatened or endangered species and a native springsnail.

Cattle once grazed the area. With the designation of the Botanical Area, livestock grazing was discontinued, riparian trees and golden columbine are plentiful. The Goodwin Fire burned into the canyon and the changes will be discussed. Sue has a Master of Natural Resources from Utah State University. Grapevine was her first flora. She has also documented the flora in an allotment in Bears Ears National Monument and parts of Yavapai Ranch. Grapevine is an ongoing project.
