Andrej Pešta – Baro frajeris

Andrej Pešta (1921–2009) byl významnou romskou osobností – amatérským fotografem, literátem a výtvarníkem. V 60. letech 20. století se aktivně zapojil do etno-emancipačního hnutí spojeného se Svazem Cigánů-Romů, které také fotograficky zdokumentoval. Jeho dílo poskytuje autentický pohled na život Romů v období socialismu – zachycuje každodennost, tradice a kulturu z perspektivy člena této komunity.
Pešta byl solitérem – jedním z mála romských fotografů, které historie zná. Svůj archiv, obsahující přibližně 1500 negativů, daroval Muzeu romské kultury, jež v roce 2017 vydalo publikaci O Fotki s výběrem jeho děl. O rok později vznikla výstava Světy Andreje Pešty, která představila jeho tvorbu i osobní příběh.
Výstava Andrej Pešta – Baro frajeris v pražské galerii Fotograf přináší jiný pohled. Zaměřuje se na zobrazování (výhradně) romského těla nejen za objektivem, ale i před ním. Důležitým aspektem je tentokrát i samotná kurátorka výstavy, která je také Romka. Vzniká tak jedinečný vizuální a významový trojúhelník, v našich kontextech vzácný.
Pešta nebyl jen dokumentaristou své komunity. Byl kronikářem jednoho života, který se vymykal stereotypům. Jeho dílo nám připomíná, že to, co považujeme za samozřejmost, může být v jiném čase či kontextu přelomové.

Andrej Pešta - Baro frajeris

Andrej Pešta (1921-2009) was an important Roma personality - amateur photographer, writer and artist. In the 1960s, he was actively involved in the ethno-emancipation movement associated with the Gypsy-Roma Union, which he also documented photographically. His work provides an authentic view of the life of the Roma during the socialist period - capturing everyday life, traditions and culture from the perspective of a member of this community.
Pešta was a solitary photographer - one of the few Roma photographers known to history. He donated his archive, containing approximately 1,500 negatives, to the Museum of Romani Culture, which in 2017 published a book O Fotki with a selection of his works. A year later, the exhibition The Worlds of Andrej Pešta was created, which presented his work and personal story.
The exhibition Andrej Pešta - Baro frajeris at the Fotograf gallery in Prague brings a different perspective. It focuses on depicting (exclusively) the Romani body not only behind the lens, but also in front of it. An important aspect this time is the curator of the exhibition herself, who is also Romani. This creates a unique visual and semantic triangle, rare in our context.
Pešta was not just a documentary filmmaker of his community. He was a chronicler of a life that defied stereotypes. His work reminds us that what we take for granted can be groundbreaking in another time or context.
