Václav Janoščík:
The Return to History, Dystopian Turn and Allegorical Turn: Audiovisual culture at the end of liberal paradigm
What if the short 20th century [1908-1977, from Ford Model T to death of Charlie Chaplin] was the age of future and dynamism that can be framed by the explosion of technology, avantgardes, futurisms and other modern ideologies and by the slow fade away of social movements and 60s euphoria. It itself can be seen as coming after the age of the past [1815-1905; from Waterloo to Russia being defeated by Japan] of European national enlightenments. And is followed by presentist era of globalisation [1990-2016; from WWW being invented and Thatcher resigning to death of David Bowie and first election of Trump] that has been analysed by many theorists as a slow cancelation of future (Mark Fisher, Slavoj Žižek, Franco Bifo Berardi), past (Frederik Jameson) or mediation in favour of immediacy (Anna Kornbluh).
(If we buy into these historical simplifications …) the obvious question is what are we going through right now, after the liberal or globalist paradigm whose crisis is beyond any doubt, and how can art and audiovisual culture intervene in this chronopolitics. In my structured, multilayered or stacked yet hopefully interactive talk (rather than lecture on worldbuilding, let’s engage in actual worldbuilding through discourse), or even a philosophical juke-box (rather that pulling the theory strings of music let’s make it theoretico-creative principle) I would like to use our narrative tradition and popular culture to exemplify these chronopolitical models and show their options, their operative agency in opening up new avenues to shared future and co-creating “we”. Basic knowledge of Star Trek, Last of Us, Fallout franchises, Capitalist Realism and Dark Forest theories, and TV show Station 11 in advance is very appreciated.
