Planeta Země musela být zničena kvůli nové mezigalaktické dálnici a pozemšťan Arthur Dent zachráněný svým kamarádem Fordem Prefectem, z něhož se vyklubal mimozemšťan, vyráží na nedobrovolný stop vesmírem. Během něj se střetne s životu nebezpečnou vogonskou poezií a za neustálého lamentování depresivního androida Marvina možná najde i odpověď na základní otázku života, vesmíru a vůbec.
