Complicity: Conceptual, Ethical and Legal Issues

Can silence be a crime? Can routine business practices constitute complicity in grave harms? And what if we become complicit simply through the way we think? This international conference, co-organized by Christopher Cowley (Charles University, Prague) and Lisa Hecht (TU Dresden), and hosted by the Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies, will explore the moral, legal, and conceptual boundaries of complicity. The event is held in collaboration with the Society for Applied Philosophy and the Gesellschaft für Analytische Philosophie.

Speakers include, among others, Charlotte Knowles (University of Groningen), who reconceives complicity as a habitual mode of being rather than a discrete act; Mateusz Grabarczyk (Adam Mickiewicz University), who examines the moral responsibility of judges under authoritarian regimes; Silvia Donzelli (University of Regensburg), who investigates corporate complicity through “neutral” acts and silence; and Jiří Přibáň (Constitutional Court of the Czech Republic / Cardiff University), who addresses the limits of judicial activism in times of political crisis.
