In recent years from Palestine to Ukraine, Congo, and the Sudan we are witnessing new abuses, the indiscriminate invasions and cruel attack by armed states on territories and weaker states, motivated by a rise nationalist, racial and falsely justified ideas, backed multiple sides with the aim of enriching those on top at the human cost of countless men, women, and children. Our event Colonization and War will screen 4 films dealing with similar themes of from around the world, and different time periods, followed up by an open panel discussion on its plot, themes, history, and parallels with our world today. They will be shown at every tuesday on the month of May at Horse Hug cafe.
1. No Other Land (2024)
This Oscar award winning film made by a Palestinian-Israeli collective shows the destruction of the occupied West Bank's Masafer Yatta by Israeli soldiers and the alliance which develops between the Palestinian activist Basel and Israeli journalist Yuval.
2. Even the Rain (2010)
As a director and his crew shoot a controversial film about Christopher Columbus in Cochabamba, Bolivia, local people rise up against plans to privatize the water supply.
3. Battle of Algiers (1966)
In the 1950s, fear and violence escalate as the people of Algiers fight for independence from the French government.
4. Paths of Glory (1957)
Set in WW1 on the western front, a French colonel defends three of his soldiers in a court-martial after they abandon a suicidal attack.
