'As far as butoh is concerned, there has been a lot of misunderstanding - it is often thought of as a dance of ghosts, something terrifying and so on. But butoh is about the search for the light in darkness, the point is you can see the light more intensively in the darkness....' (Sumako Koseki)

Sumako Koseki is Japanese dancer and choreographer. She studied traditional Japanese performing arts and butoh. Her teacher was Tadashi Suzuki (art of Noh, Kabuki in a contemporary context) and Isso Miura (butoh). She studied philosophy and psychology (University of Tokyo). She worked with many significant artists (Grotowski, Barba, Leotard, Adrien and others).
Among with butoh her training is based on traditional Japanese theatre and martial arts, where treating with Ki energy and breath is focused to open our sensibility. Sumako denotes butoh as 'the dance on the edge' where expression and movement appears from emergency and vital necessity. As a samurai or an animal, in emergent situation our body finds how to react immediately without logical thinking. Empty/dead body is a key notion here. Empty and depersonalized dancer can wake up ancient memories encoded in our 'reptilian brain' or 'DNA'. From there movement is born, and we can touch the chaos and shadows of our subconsciousness, but not only to stay there - through the opening of a fertile field of the collective memory we can share deep emotions with an audience.
