Two people have a date in a park they have never been to before. Arriving separately in the park, they are both surprised to discover that it is a huge area and consequently they cannot find one another. In this situation each person has to choose between waiting in a fixed place in the hope that the other will find them, or else starting to look for the other in the hope that they have chosen to wait somewhere. If they both choose to wait, they will never meet. If they both choose to walk there are chances that they meet and chances that they do not. If one chooses to wait and the other chooses to walk, then there is a theoretical certainty that they will meet eventually; in practice, though, it may take too long for it to be guaranteed. The question posed, then, is: what strategies should they choose to maximize their probability of meeting?
The premise of the series is that a rendezvous between an artist and a scientist is staged. They start from the same topic, but they each talk from the perspective of their own discipline. The scientist talks about science, the artist speaks about art. At certain points in the course of this address they might intersect. Equally, a complete disconnection, despite the common thematic space shared, might present itself. A conversation following the two presentations explores these intersections and discontinuities.
The fourth session in the Rendezvous Problem series, with theoretical physicist Oldřich Semerák and artist Martin Netočný, will take the form of a guided tour through some of the rooms in the permanent exhibitions at the National Gallery’s Veletržní palác. The event will be conceived as a paraphrase on the Rorschach test, using exhibited artworks as the starting points of interdisciplinary conversations. Rather than claiming a common language between art and science, the dialogue between Semerák and Netočný is designed with an awareness of the often disjunctive semiotic systems of the two fields. From this perspective, the exhibited paintings or sculptures - considering their potential as triggers for imagination and without historicising tendencies - are tested as springboards that could metaphorically bridge the misunderstandings emerging when different conceptual fields come together.
The presentations and the discussion will be held in Czech.
▶︎ Oldřich Semerák is a theoretical physicist working in the areas of general relativity, relativistic astrophysics and black-hole space-times. He has published extensively on topics such as spinning particles in general relativity, gravitating disks around black holes and relativistic motion forces that might enable an intuition of space-time geometries. He is a professor at the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics, Institute of Theoretical Physics.
▶︎ Martin Netočný is an artist and a curator whose work revolves around the deconstruction of shared historical narratives, an analysis of post-industrial landscapes and the politics of public space. He curated several exhibitions framed by the phenomenology of post-industrial landscape approaches and possibilities of post-humanistic making. He is graduate of the Department of Photography at FAMU and currently a PhD candidate at AVU with a project focused on the conditions of interspecies sensitivity.

Dva lidé si dají rande v parku, kde ještě nikdy nebyli. Když přijdou do parku každý zvlášť, oba s překvapením zjistí, že park je obrovský, a proto se nebudou moci najít. V této situaci si každý z nich musí vybrat, zda bude čekat na pevně daném místě v naději, že ho ten druhý najde, nebo začne toho druhého hledat v naději, že se ten druhý rozhodl někde čekat. Pokud se oba rozhodnou čekat, nikdy se nesetkají. Pokud se oba rozhodnou procházet, existuje šance, že se setkají, i šance, že se nesetkají. Pokud se jeden rozhodne čekat a druhý se rozhodne procházet, pak existuje teoretická jistota, že se nakonec setkají; v praxi to však může trvat příliš dlouho na to, aby to bylo zaručeno. Položená otázka tedy zní: jaké strategie by měli zvolit, aby maximalizovali pravděpodobnost setkání?
Předpokladem série je, že setkání umělce*kyně a vědce*kyně je zinscenováno. Vycházejí ze stejného tématu, ale každý*á z nich hovoří z perspektivy svého oboru. Vědec*kyně mluví o vědě, umělec*kyně o umění. V určitých momentech se jejich rozhovory mohou protnout. Stejně tak může dojít k úplnému rozpojení, navzdory společnému tematickému prostoru, který sdílejí. Rozhovor, který bude následovat po obou prezentacích, se bude zabývat těmito průsečíky a diskontinuitami.
Čtvrté setkání ze série Rendezvous Problem, s teoretickým fyzikem Oldřichem Semerákem a umělcem a kurátorem Martinem Netočným, proběhne formou komentované procházky vybranými částmi stálých expozic ve Veletržním paláci Národní galerie, zejména výstavou 1918–1938: První Československá republika. Událost bude koncipována jako parafráze Rorschachova testu – vystavená umělecká díla zde poslouží jako výchozí body pro mezioborovou konverzaci. Cílem není hledat společný jazyk mezi uměním a vědou, ale otevřeně nahlížet na odlišné znakově-sémantické systémy obou oblastí. Z tohoto pohledu jsou obrazy či sochy – bez historizujícího rámování – chápány jako možné spouštěče imaginace a metaforické mosty překonávající nedorozumění vznikající při střetu různých konceptuálních světů.
Prezentace i diskuse budou probíhat v češtině.
▶︎ Oldřich Semerák je teoretický fyzik působící v oblastech obecné relativity, relativistické astrofyziky a geometrií černoděrových prostoročasů. Publikoval řadu studií o rotujících částicích v obecné relativitě, gravitačních discích kolem černých děr či relativistických silách, které mohou podnítit intuitivní představu o prostoročasových strukturách. Působí jako profesor na Matematicko-fyzikální fakultě UK, na Ústavu teoretické fyziky.
▶︎ Martin Netočný je umělec, který se ve své práci zaměřuje na dekonstrukci sdílených historických narativů, analýzu postindustriálních krajin a politiku veřejného prostoru. Kurátoroval několik výstav věnovaných fenomenologii postindustriální krajiny a možnostem posthumanistické tvorby. Je absolventem Katedry fotografie na FAMU a v současnosti je doktorandem AVU, kde se věnuje výzkumu podmínek mezidruhové senzitivity.
