Day Trips from Portland - The Best around the City
A nice option for a day trip from Portland, Mt. Hood is the biggest peak in Oregon and one of the biggest in the country. The mountain is a potentially active stratovolcano. It has an elevation of close to 3,429 meters above sea level. There is the Timberline Trail which actually circumnavigates the mountain and has a 65.5 km long path which you can explore. If you love hiking, you could head over to the 150-mile long Willamette Valley. The beautiful greenery, pristine rivers and wide range of flora and fauna make it the best trek near Portland. For a beachier feel, you can take a day trip from Portland to Cannon Beach. The beach has a historic rock formation in addition to hiking trails as well.

If camping is your scene, don’t worry, there are so many spots for camping near Portland and in the city as well. The Oxbow Regional Park is home to the Sandy River and fresh salmon. There is an annual festival that celebrates salmon and you can enjoy some of the best freshly cooked salmon while you camp in its many trails. Ainsworth State Park is another great place to enjoy a slew of outdoor activities. The park is located in the Columbia River Gorge, which is next to the Historic Columbia River Highway. There are so many amenities for campers, including full RV-hook up sites, tents, showers and toilets, picnic areas, playgrounds, and amphitheaters so you can go all out! Barton Park is another fun place for a Portland adventure with camping. Located on the Clackamas River, this park has many events including hiking, muse and event amenities, fishing, camping, and other recreational activities.

The Portland Japanese festival is a 12-acre Japanese garden which has many traditional Japanese flowers and greenery. The garden consists of eight spaces along with a cultural village. It is a tribute to Japanese culture after Portland became a sister city to Sapporo in Japan. The Oregon Zoo is another great place to explore the city and is one of the oldest zoos in the country. The zoo plays host to hundreds of different species of animals, making it a must-visit location for animal lovers.
