Science Pub Portland: Strange Life in the Deep

A look at creatures that thrive in the deep oceans off Oregon’s coast with Annie Lindgren, PhD, Deep-Sea Biologist, and Associate Vice President for Research at Portland State University

Imagine spending your days in constant darkness, under crushing pressure, with little food and almost no oxygen. To humans, this seems deadly, but to deep-sea animals, this is everyday life. As it turns out, we don’t have to venture very far from Portland to enter an alien deep ocean world where animals glow to communicate, breathe without oxygen, and possess a suite of tools not just to survive, but thrive. In fact, the ability to live in harsh environments is extremely common on our planet – we just can’t always see it. In this talk, Dr. Lindgren will pull back the curtain and highlight some of the fun, strange, and amazing creatures that thrive in a dynamic ecosystem that flourishes out of eyesight in the deep waters off the coast of Oregon.
