PDX Adult Soapbox Derby 2025 - 26th Anniversary Celebration
Overview: The PDX Adult Soapbox Derby returns to Mt. Tabor Park for its 26th anniversary, continuing Portland's most beloved and uniquely creative summer tradition. This gravity-powered race celebrates the intersection of engineering, art, and pure Portland weirdness as costumed adults pilot homemade racing contraptions down the slopes of an extinct cinder cone volcano. Known as one of the last true Portland traditions that captures the city's creative spirit, this free community event brings thousands of spectators together for an unforgettable day of laughter, competition, and quintessential Portland entertainment.
Highlights: Since starting in the summer of 1997, the PDX Adult Soapbox Derby has become a hallmark of Portland summer culture, showcasing the city's renowned creativity and community spirit. The event runs primarily on community sponsorships and volunteer support, making it accessible as Portland's best free summer event. Participants compete in wildly imaginative homemade vehicles designed to look like everything from beer carts and UFOs to cruise ships and characters from popular movies. The race takes place on Mt. Tabor's challenging course featuring curves, straightaways, and the famous mid-mountain viewing area affectionately known as 'Blood Alley,' where spectators gather with BYO beverages and concession stand treats.
