Join MHS and Portland By the Foot as stories of riots, battles, mayhem, and criminal hijinks from generations past come alive with horror and humor, impropriety and inspiration!
You’ll despise the fiends who committed crimes against humanity, turning vast profits and poisoning geopolitics across the Atlantic World. Be shocked by the children who maimed one another for a nationally-sanctioned holiday. Be gob-smacked by the many ways obscure legal decisions from two centuries ago still impact you today…
And, you’ll be stirred by brave resisters whose acts of defiance expanded freedoms for modern-day Americans.

Tour guide Dugan Murphy contextualizes the social, cultural, and economic context in which the historical events took place and thoughtfully examines the impact of these events on society as a whole. He prioritizes respect for the victims of these crimes and their families. And, we invite you to reflect on your own values and responsibilities as members of a larger community.
That said, know that the content on this tour is dark, so be prepared. This tour is not appropriate for children under the age of 14. If you’re thinking of bringing a teenager, consider their emotional maturity. For a complete content disclaimer, please email
