Everett’s Note: I first “discovered” Deborah Holland thanks to legendary musicians Stanley Clarke (Return to Forever) and Stewart Copeland (The Police) who, recognizing her brilliance as a songwriter, formed Animal Logic as a vehicle for her songs and performance. As you might imagine, the two records they made together are brilliant and remain among my favorites. So, when Deborah reached out about playing in Port Townsend, I jumped at the chance to present her, up close and personal, in the intimate confines of Rainshadow Recording.

"Since her ‘escape’ from Animal Logic, Deborah has grown and grown as an artist as her songs go ever deeper into a life lived. “ - Stewart Copeland - Drummer and Composer
Well before being plucked from obscurity to front innovative and iconic trio Animal Logic in the late ‘80s through her decades of success since, Deborah Holland has been remarkably prolific with her musical output. More impressive, though, is that regardless of genre or era, of setting or surroundings, that output has been consistently inspired and irrefutably captivating.
Fortunately, there’s been an eager audience for the fruits of her work since she and her Animal Logic bandmates – Police drummer Stewart Copeland and legendary jazz bassist Stanley Clarke – dropped their self-titled debut in 1989 and followed it up with Animal Logic II in 1991. She’s also shared six diverse solo albums, records and performs with Wendy Waldman and Cidny Bullens as folk supergroup The Refugees, and scored a handful of feature films, including the cult classic Circuitry Man.
What’s more, she has performed on both The Tonight Show and Late Night as well as MTV, VH1, and MuchMusic. Meanwhile, songs from her vast catalogue have been featured in acclaimed series like Keeping Up with the Kardashians, CSI, My Name Is Earl, and dozens of others.
She also managed to have an impressive stint as an educator, first with a decade-plus tenure at California State University, then as Program Director of music at Langara College in Vancouver, Canada where she moved in 2010, and continues to teach the History of Popular Music at Douglas College in New Westminster, BC.
In November of 2022, after a 30 plus years hiatus, Animal Logic released 2 new songs, "Can You Tell Me" and "Ordinary.” Digital downloads are available for these 2 songs.
In March of 2025 Deborah will release a new full-length album, I Made It This Far. it was recorded in over a dozen studios with many musicians, some of whom have contributed to past albums (Wendy Waldman, Patterson Barrett, Adrian Dolan, Carl Sealove). The record was produced by Deborah and mixed by Wendy Waldman and Abraham Parker. Those who have heard it are saying it may be Holland's best work yet.
Deborah now resides on the Sunshine Coast in British Columbia but still spends a lot of time in her previous "home" - Los Angeles.
