All Saint’s Anglican Church
Admission: $250
The Department of Creative and Festival Arts (DCFA) of The University of the West Indies proudly presents ‘Glorious Voices and Steel’, part of the DCFA Legacy Year productions, 2025-2026. ‘Glorious Voices and Steel’ is the title of the seasonal production of the UWI Arts Chorale and Steel. This production showcases the ever-popular masterwork Vivaldi ‘Gloria’ and the equally popular Mozart short choral classic ‘Regina Coeli’ along with Christmas favourites. This concert, for one evening only, takes place at the historic All Saint’s Anglican Church, on Saturday, November 29, 2025 at 7:00pm. Senior Lecturer and Deputy Dean of Distance and Outreach at The UWI, Jessel Murray, will conduct the combined forces of the UWI Arts Chorale and professional Orchestra in performances of the two Masterworks. Khion De Las, Instructor of Music at the DCFA, will lead the UWI Arts Steel in seasonal favourites.
Featuring high on the list of choral music favourites, ‘Gloria’ is one of the most well-regarded and popular choral works in existence. It is easily accessible to audiences with its catchy rhythms and memorable melodies. It is paired with the equally accessible and energetic Mozart ‘Regina Coeli’. The audience will have the opportunity to experience these rarely performed gems in one special concert. The Chorale, in the tradition of presenting works with authenticity, will perform both works in the original Latin accompanied by professional orchestra. The performance will feature soloists from the Chorale inclusive of Stephanie Carrington, fresh from her debut solo concert in the summer as well as soprano Adafih Padmore, mezzo-soprano Gabrielle Tull, tenor Christopher Sookhoo and baritone Anderson Hudlin. Of course, this is Christmas after all, so be thrilled by the UWI Arts Steel in their performance of the Tchaikovsky ‘Nutcracker Suite’, as well as a Pentatonix arrangement of ‘Carol of the Bells’ and surprise joint choir/steel favourites to bring in the season.
In the last few years, the UWI Arts Chorale has gained a following in Trinidad and Tobago with their eagerly awaited premieres of choral works. Among many masterworks, the ensemble has presented the national premiere of Benjamin Britten’s classic work ‘A Ceremony of Carols’ with harp accompaniment (2010), the complete ‘Carmina Burana’ in 2018 and the Mozart ‘Requiem’ (2024). The UWI Arts Steel is fresh off two recent dance collaborations. The ensemble partnered with the UWI Festival Dance Ensemble in the world premiere of the film ‘Dancing on Steel’, which was screened at PASIC (Percussion Arts Society International Conference) in the USA in 2024, and a recent collaboration with the Caribbean School of Dance in their performance of the ‘Coconut Cracker’ at Queen’s Hall. Under the joint guidance of Jessel Murray and Khion De Las, the UWI Arts Chorale and Steel have completed international tours to Massachusetts, New York, Belize and Mexico.
This joint production of ‘Glorious Voices and Steel’ promises to be an unforgettable Christmas experience of musicmaking for the entire family. Tickets, $250 general seating, are available at the Department of Creative and Festival Arts (DCFA) at Cheesman Avenue, and from members of the participating ensembles.
