Artists: Kiata Mason & Lucy Juhnke
Dream is an experimental and collaborative exhibition, which was borne from conversations around shared symbolism in dreams, that the artists have had. The body of work includes completely new pieces, as well as the resurfacing of older works containing dreams.
Our dreams include the darkness as well as the light, the hopelessness as well as the hope. Swiss Psychiatrist Carl Jung has written extensively about a collective unconscious, which contains symbols and imagery that are replicated throughout the ages and across different cultures. Often, people have their own symbols - lucky charms that give them a sense of hope when they appear.
Much like Swedish artist Hilma af Klint's body of work simplified complex spiritual ideas into visual form, these paintings explore the abstract and cerebral landscapes we experience when we dream.
Various materials and media are used, and some works are layered by each artist on top of older works by Mason. Much like the non-linear experience of dreaming, the artworks play with the idea of time not being linear and are a communication between each artist and the audience. A few pieces were worked on completely independently by each artist.
Dream is a visual manifestation of whimsy, deep feeling, and choosing to find moments of hope in the face of increasingly harrowing global events. Dream expands focus from society's current situation to include an infinite, universal framework, which is beauty, connection and the shared experience of being alive.
Works on display for the month of August.
