Lancer is a sci-fi rpg focused on mechanized combat, and taking place in the far-distant future. Players act as the titular lancers, ace mech pilots sent on missions, with specific goals in mind but a great deal of flexibility as far as how those goals are met.
Mission structure incorporates both “narrative play,” in which the pilots act outside of their mechs in whichever way they see fit (for example, investigating, negotiating, and conducting small-scale operations such as espionage or assassination), and “mech combat,” which is exactly as it says on the tin: pilots enter their cockpits and engage in open combat against enemies, which can be anything from infantry squadrons to enemy mechs to giant monsters.
Narrative play is designed to be streamlined and flexible, allowing players to take most any approach they can think of to resolve an obstacle via open-ended “Skill Triggers” which grow stronger and more numerous as a player levels, and allowing the GM to run entire narrative segments in theater of the mind, while mech combat is highly tactical to the point that it requires a battle map to keep proper track of positioning, cover, objectives, etc.
Core conceits of the setting are that 1: the player characters have some sort of patron or group responsible for outfitting them and handing down missions, 2: interstellar travel is relatively slow, with “Blink Gate” installations allowing FTL travel, but only to other Blink Gates, 3: 3D printing technology is so advanced that it largely trivializes construction and manufacturing, 4: the central body of galactic government is a utopia-in-progress, not a grimdark totalitarian regime, and 5: while cyborgs and clones exist, transhuman practices such as mind-uploading are expressly forbidden by both the Department of Justice and [REDACTED] under the Deimos Accords.
