On June 14th an undeniable cornerstone of UK Hip-Hop, 'Billy Brimstone' AKA 'the High Plains Drifter', AKA Jehst! Returns to The Underground, Plymouth!
Having been a critical figure in the UK scene for over two decades, Jehst has asserted himself as possibly the most influential rapper to ever emerge from these shores. Bursting onto the scene in 1999 with the cult-classic 'Premonitions’, the independently released EP was hailed by critics and fans alike for its poetic vocals and forward-thinking production; launching the iconic YNR Productions label and the career of this inspirational artist.
The creator of truly goated albums such as the classic 'Falling Down', 'Return of the Drifter', the EP 'Nuke Proof Suit', 'Dragon of an Ordinary Family', 'Billy Green is Dead', he is widely accepted for pushing the boundaries of his chosen art-form while providing a blueprint for countless sound-alikes. Jehst created a sound that defined a generation and now stands behind a discography stretching into triple figures with a career that has been typified by a restless creativity and side-projects galore.
His last LP, 2023’s ‘Mork Calling Orson’ received radio coverage crossing from Radio X to Kiss FM, the album’s crowning glory, ‘One Horse Town’ feat. Eva Lazarus and Confucius MC, featured on the BBC 6 Music playlist for four weeks. Jehst also curated 6 Music’s post-midnight ‘Lose Yourself’ mix, and featured on Radio 2’s ‘For The Love Of Hip-Hop’ show, whose host Romesh Ranganathan described Jehst as “a living legend - maybe the most influential name in UK hip-hop”.
Stand out singles such as 'Alcoholic Author', 'Australian' and 'England' show off the broad expertise of lyrical execution in both technical ability and creative for-thought through his subjects, wordplay and concepts as an artist. Whereas collaborations with pioneering artists like Blak Twang and Klashnekoff, right through to new school heroes Loyle Carner and Lord Apex, the artist also known as Billy Brimstone has carved out a space for himself in the UK's musical landscape. Having also produced projects such as 'Underworld Epics' on YNR and most recently 'Mug Shots - Vol. 1' with Tea Sea Records and worked on collaboration projects 'GROUP' with Lee Scott & Blah Records, he is still putting out music at the top-tier of his genre.
