We would like to invite everyone who may be interested to come hang out with us on Saturday, August 2nd from 1-3pm at Platte Ridge Park in Platte City. We have reserved the shelter near the playground and pond.
The purpose of this hang out is two-fold. Evie has been seizure free for 2.5+ years, and we are hoping to celebrate this by donating weighted blankets, weighted animals, or monetary amounts to the Epilepsy department at Children's Mercy Hospital to distribute to families in need of these items. Weighted blankets and animals have shown to assist many individuals with Epilepsy. Evie has been using a weighted blanket every night for 3.5 years. The weight of these items helps to bring regulation and decrease stress and anxiety - common triggers for a seizure. They also increase quality sleep, which helps decrease seizure potential.
Another reason we are hosting this event is to invite people in our community to come learn about seizures/epilepsy. Even having a daughter and a niece who have epilepsy, I had been uneasy and scared when one of them would have a seizure. Now that I have learned how to support them, I feel much more comfortable and empowered, which in turn allows them to receive what they need in that moment.
NRAD plans to attend and have an ambulance on site. They will be demonstrating how to keep someone safe during a seizure, allow time with the ambulance, and have fun give-aways!
Platte County Board of Services and The Epilepsy Foundation of Kansas and Missouri will be hanging out with us, as well. Also, Tucker Time Coffee will be on site with delicious drinks to purchase☕️
