Exploration Hike: Trout Run Nature Preserve

The deep forest at Trout Run Nature Preserve lends itself to an array of habitat types and, thus, diverse flora and fauna. Experience this beautiful and heavily wooded ravine, well-known to nature-lovers and biologists. Clear water tumbles along a fairly steep gradient forming riffles and pools, with a glade and boggy area near an old railroad tunnel at the north end. Outcrops of schist bedrock protrude from the landscape, hemlocks and towering tulip poplars dominate the riparian buffer while mixed-hardwoods, such as an array of oaks and hickories, define the drier hilltops.

What to Expect: The route will cover a total of 4 miles and will include a road crossing and some time on the Enola Low Grade Rail Trail. This hike covers varying terrain including some narrow, rocky, and difficult sections. This event is recommended for ages 14 and up (participants under 18 must be accompanied by an adult).

Where to Meet: Please park and meet at the parking lot for Steinman Run Nature Preserve on Stump Road. Parking can fill up on weekends so please consider carpooling.

What to Bring: Sturdy hiking shoes are recommended. Hiking poles are optional. Have adequate water and a snack. Dress for the weather.

Hike Leaders: Mary Patterson is an Interpretive Ranger with the Lancaster Conservancy. She is passionate about wildflowers, butterflies, and all the wonderful things that can be discovered outside. She is keenly in tune to the herbaceous plants that keep meadows and forest floors interesting. Mary also leads the local Susquehanna Nature Journal Club, is an active PA Master Naturalist, and is a Leave No Trace instructor.

Refund Policy: If you are unable to attend this event after purchasing a ticket, refund requests must be made at least 48 hours before the event.

Animal Policy: Service animals active or in training are welcome. Please leave all pets at home.

Cancellation Policy: This event will be held rain or shine, with cancellation for severe weather made at the time of the event. If the Conservancy reschedules the event, attendees will be emailed and tickets will be automatically moved to the new date. If the Conservancy cancels the event, attendees will be notified via email when possible and refunded.
