This 6-week block of evening classes is for complete beginners and anyone who would like to go back to basics to learn best practices and a professional approach.
This crossover apron has been designed especially for this class as it provides an excellent opportunity to explore several essential techniques that will come in handy across endless sewing projects. It’s also super useful, unisex, and doesn’t require any fitting, so that you can focus entirely on mastering your sewing skills first. Techniques that we will learn in this class include:
🪡 Sewing facings
🪡 Perfect curves and corners
🪡 Patch pockets
🪡 Bagging out
🪡 Double turned hems
🪡 Making straps
🪡 Machine and hand sewn buttons
🪡 Machine sewn buttonholes
You will need to bring enough fabric to complete your apron, plus matching thread, and a basic sewing kit of fabric shears, sewing snips, pins and measuring tape. Full details will be emailed to you before the class, and I will be on hand to answer any questions that you have about fabrics. The paper pattern and detailed instruction sheets will be provided, so that you will be able to complete many more aprons at home.
Key principles covered in our beginners classes:
🪡 Dress patterns and working with seam free patterns
🪡 The importance of fabric grains
🪡 Accurate cutting out and economical use of fabric
🪡 Marking up methods
🪡 Different types of interfacing and how to use them
This pace of the class will be dictated by you and can vary from block to block. The important thing is that you all complete your project without feeling rushed, and if we do finish our aprons earlier, we will add a bonus project at the end of the block that will feature an additional skill or technique.
