Hear about the importance of waterway protection and observe nature. You will be guided around the inlet, getting a new perspective on the surrounding environment. There will be a chance for experienced kayakers to clean up plastic while we paddle. We will also be running activities on land, including a pest trapping workshop with the Beautification Trust and a freshwater monitoring workshop on top of lots of information about our estuaries to fully immerse yourself in connecting with te taiao. Fun for the whole whānau!

🚣 On the Water – Explore the Pahurehure inlet by kayak with Mountains to Sea Conservation Trust and Auckland Sea Kayaks. There will be a talk on signs of estuarine health and how it connects to the wider harbour and ecosystem. There will be equipment provided for those who want to collect rubbish from the water as we kayak - give back while enjoying being on the water!
🌿 On the Land – After your paddle spend some time with Mountains to Sea Conservation Trust and the Beautification Trust to learn more about our local freshwater and how the streams have been altered by development, as well as pest trapping work happening in Youngs Park and beyond.
🌞 Weather call -
Sea conditions permitting - we will run with light rain. A final weather call will be made the afternoon prior to the event. A back up location may be used. Cancellation due to weather will be communicated via email or Eventbrite.
🎟 Registrations -
Children younger than 7 will not be able to participate in the kayaking activity.
Children aged 7 - 13 need to have a confident adult in the back of their kayak. Children under 16 need an adult companion.
Swimming ability recommended, please indicate your kayaking experience via registration. Clean up equipment will only be given to those who have kayaked previously.
Please note that the maximum weight for the sea kayaks is 120kg per person.
Expect to spend 1hr kayaking.
What to bring -
Clothing suitable for kayaking (no jeans please)
Footwear you do not mind getting wet and muddy
Water bottle
Rain coat
Hat, sunglasses and sunblock
What will be provided -
Double sit on top kayaks
PFD
Paddle
H&S equipment
Kayak instructors
Rubbish pickers, gloves and bags.
🏠 Where -
Youngs Park - Papakura.
Please note there is easy access to the registration tent via car and pathways. The on land workshop will require moving across uneven grassed areas. The boat ramp to the kayaks is slippery and steep. M and F toilets on site. Kayaks are 2 seater. Both participants paddle, this is 2 handed, please let crew know if you need adjustments.

Mountains to Sea Conservation Trust runs a series of free and subsidised events over the summer months — we rely on your support to make them happen. We appreciate donations, either cash/eftpos on the day, online or by giving a koha of your time volunteering at a future event.
❌ Cancellation policy -
Please cancel your spot via Eventbrite ASAP if you can no longer make it. If you give less than 24 hrs notice when cancelling your registration or you no show without a valid excuse (i.e COVID, or other illness/emergency) then you may be sent an invoice of $20 per person. This is to ensure spaces do not go to waste and that people do not miss out on attending this free event.
