We open our season with The Vaudevilles, an evening of laughter and wit that celebrates the short comic plays of Anton Chekhov. This production features three of his most beloved one-acts—The Bear, The Proposal, and The Tragedian In Spite of Himself—each filled with larger-than-life characters, quick banter, and the kind of absurd misunderstandings that never fail to delight.
To heighten the fun, we’re weaving in vaudeville variety acts between the plays and setting the entire evening in the atmosphere of a 1920s speakeasy. Audiences will feel like they’ve stepped into a hidden club, complete with vintage flair and the playful chaos of variety entertainment. Music, comedy routines, and specialty turns will break up the scenes, creating the kind of immersive, anything-can-happen vibe that vaudeville was known for.
Whether you’re a fan of Russian classics or brand new to Chekhov, The Vaudevilles promises to be a joyful and surprising kickoff to our season. It’s a night that blends the elegance of timeless theatre, the energy of vaudeville, and the thrill of a speakeasy gathering—an invitation to laugh, enjoy, and share in the spirit of live performance.
