Interplay: Telehealth, Documentation, and Ethics

This course is intended to introduce differences between documenting traditional, in-person therapy/counseling services and documenting virtual/telehealth therapy/counseling services. Those differences will be explored further for the purpose of informing and educating participants on best practices for the documentation of such services. The framework for the entirety of this course is rooted in the ethical considerations that must be accounted for in telehealth care, including what those ethical implications means for clinicians, therapists, and counselors.

Learning Objectives:

Participants will:

1. Differentiate between documenting TeleBehavioral Health and traditional counseling/therapy services.
2. Identify and discuss the ethical considerations of providing TeleBehavioral Health Services, and what those ethical considerations mean for clinicians.
3. Identify and acknowledge the limitations of TeleBehavioral Health.
4. Describe how to use clinical documentation to highlight therapeutic interventions that were rendered in a telehealth/telemedicine environment.
5. Describe concrete, practical strategies that strengthen documentation for TeleBehavioral Health care.
6. Develop a logic model for the documentation of TeleBehavioral Health therapy for Individual and Group Sessions (i.e., capturing interventions, responses, and telehealth environment type).
