Doors: 7.30pm
Performance from 8.30pm
We present a quintet led by the brilliant bassist, Dave Jones. Beyond being a great bass player, Dave is a seriously-respected all round musician whose work encompasses band-leading, composing and high-level education. London Jazz News has written:
“Dave’s writing is sophisticated and nuanced. Just when you think you know where he’s going, there is a change of texture or tempo, you do find yourself in an unexpected place and…it’s beautiful!!”
Or this from Jazzwise: “…bassist Dave Jones, the long-unsung titan of Pastorius-style fretless bass”
Anybody that came to hear Hejira at the Playhouse last week will surely back up those statements and will have appreciated the genius of Dave’s playing: it is at the same time, supremely melodic and always with a palpable deep groove!
Dave’s bass playing in recent years has included work with the Ronnie Scott’s Soul and Jazz Orchestra, the Pete Cater Big Band, Tom Seals, the Brandon Allen Groove Band, Jeremy Sassoon, Julian Costello, Jacqui Dankworth, Frank Griffith and John Etheridge.
‘Dave Jones Affinity’ will feature some of the UK’s finest jazz musicians including Tom Ridout on saxophones, John Turville on piano and Tristan Mailliot on drums (the 5th member of this quintet TBA at time of writing).
All of the above are exceptional musicians, but for now, a word about Tom Ridout: both he and his sister Alex (heard a few years ago at The Spin) were recent finalists in the BBC Young Musician Of The Year competition and have both gone on to lead full-on careers in the jazz scene. Tom has already worked with Gwilym Simcock, Jacob Collier, Gregory Porter, Clark Tracey and Nikki Iles, to name just a few. London Jazz News wrote of Tom: “Names to note: … the very persuasive Tom Ridout on tenor”
This evening’s program will explore Dave’s arrangements of standards, classic jazz repertoire and his original compositions evoking the energy and atmosphere of classic swing alongside Latin jazz and contemporary European jazz textures. Expect a dynamic evening with gentle and evocative moments through to blistering highs with improvising of the highest level.
