Day 1: Encaustic Underpainting
Discover how to create an initial base composition using pigmented encaustic gesso. This foundation will set the stage for the translucent wax layers you’ll add later.

Learn how to pigment R&F encaustic gesso with Kama Aqua-dispersion Pigments. Set up a stay-wet palette to keep your paints workable longer. Explore a variety of ways to make unique marks on a substrate before applying wax.

Day 2: Encaustic Painting
On the second day, you’ll enhance your underpainting by applying clear and pigmented encaustic wax to the surfaces you prepared on Day 1. Add layers of wax to transform the dull, chalky gesso underpainting into a richly layered surface.

Selectively expose or obscure elements of your underpainting through layers of wax, for a dynamic interplay between hidden and visible layers. Enhance and finish your paintings with surface marks on top of the wax.
