20 months into the Canadian Ukraine visa policy, 209,938 had been welcomed to Canada. 20 months into the Gaza program, the number stands at 886. Ukrainian processing times averaged two weeks (not 20 months), and on average 1400 visas were processed daily, versus 1.5 daily for Palestinians from Gaza.
(Notably, Afghans living in Ukraine had a much harder time evacuating and getting to Canada).
Yes, it was fantastic that we welcomed Ukrainians, and it showed that when there is political will, the immigration system can work expeditiously. But for those fleeing the unimaginable in Gaza, every single file is being wrongfully treated as suspect, guilty until proven otherwise, which has had lethal results in hundreds of cases.
That's why we need to continue with public pressure to evacuate on an urgent basis all remaining 3700 applicants from Gaza and approved over 2500 visas for those stranded in Egypt
