About the event

The Scar Film Screening + Oral Histories
Join us at the National Coal Mining Museum of England for a screening of The Scar, the first film in the Coalfield Trilogy, exploring the resilience of East Durham’s women after the closure of the last collieries. The film will be introduced by the From Earth Comes Light exhibition curator, Jennifer Jasmine White.

About the Film:

The Scar is a 1997 film by Amber Films, serving as the first instalment in their Coalfield Trilogy. The narrative explores the lives of women in East Durham following the closure of the last collieries, focusing on their resilience amidst economic and social upheaval. Set against the backdrop of a community in transition, the film examines themes of loss, survival, and adaptation, as families struggle to find new identities in the wake of industrial decline.

Film run time: 114 mins (Amber Films, 1997)
Film start time: 11am

After the Film:

Following the film (1.30pm-4pm), the AmberSide Trust is collecting personal stories from those who worked in coal mining or protested pit closures. Contribute your experiences and help expand their archive of mining life, which includes photos, portraits, and films from the Miners’ Strike of 1984.

Do you have experience of working in the coal mining industry or striking against pit closures?

The collected oral histories will deepen understanding of the collection, support education, exhibitions and publications.
