Our existence is an endless cycle of water. A drop, a stream, out in the ocean, in our bodies and out again.
If we think about the nature of water – how it circulates and how it has been around for millions and millions of years, moving through endless bodies and plants – we start to realize how extremely old the water we use is, and the beauty of it consisting of components that have always been here.
In this exhibition, three artists draw from the wellspring of this ancient element, each of their works being shaped by water as medium and a collaborator.
Whether rippling across a canvas, washing items ashore, or murmuring on top of images, water here becomes a catalysator for memory, migration, and transformation.
Tor Erik Bøe gathers what the sea leaves behind. His sculptures, built from beach waste, bear the tide's testimony – a material archive of what washes ashore and what we leave behind. Plastic, driftwood, netting: fragments of a wider ecological unease, woven into forms that are both artifact and warning. Bøe’s sculptures ask us to see the shore not as boundary, but as a porous threshold between the human and natural world.
Liv Tandrevold Eriksen invites water into the very fabric of her paintings. In her process, pigment is pulled by moisture, bleeding into uncertain edges. These are not images of water, but paintings with it – where the medium is a collaborator in fluid abstraction. A quiet tension unfolds between intention and accident, as water, pigment and the human hand leaves its trace.
Sandra Vaka turns her lens toward water’s optics. In her photographs, droplets become tiny lenses – magnifying, distorting, and refracting digital images beneath them. What we see is layered: surface upon surface, the cool skin of a screen beneath the warm breath of condensation. Her work seduces the eye while questioning what it sees, making water not just an element, but an interface.
Together, these artists wade into the fluid poetics of water - an element that resists containment, like art itself.
