The Importance of Being Earnest is full of the kind of witty humor for which Oscar Wilde is rightly famed -- it features wordplay, sarcasm, and great farcical comedy. It follows two men, Jack and Algernon, who create fictitious identities to escape social obligations and pursue romance. Wilde mocks the hypocrisy and triviality of upper-class society through witty dialogue and absurd situations, ultimately celebrating the importance of honesty--despite the characters' frequent deceptions. The play remains one of Wilde's most famous works, praised for its sharp wit and clever social commentary.
