We're back for our July edition of Your Sunday Best, this time with Akanbi from the Groovy Groovy party in NYC, and Portland's Phreaker Fighter. YSB residents will be warming us up for the first few hours. We'll be taking August off, so you better make sure you get your reps in while you can!

Akanbi is a fountain of energy whose passion and enthusiasm for music is undiluted and unmatched. He brings a focused intention to the community, tapping into the spiritual frequencies that go beyond the surface. Akanbi is heading a new generation of dedicated ravers in New York City. Raised in Lagos, Nigeria, with limited access to the internet but a huge thirst for new music, Akanbi moved to NYC in 2010 and immersed himself head on into every corner of dance music, as a serious dancer and, eventually, a DJ and rave activator. He’s cultivated his unique style of DJing that delivers an intentional blend of freak-out boogie music, sensual rollers, whip-crack bangers, insistent percussion, afrobeat goodness, deep thumping low frequencies & slow-burning experimental descents. In 2014, he started New York City's GROOVY GROOVY party - a judgment-free atmosphere for wild dance floors, spiritual, mental & physical rejuvenation, radical politics, and a dose of undeniably rocking talent. Akanbi has made an impression with visionary sets at Sustain Release, Nowadays & Public Records, and internationally at the legendary soundsystem function like Wax Treatment, Tresor, Berghain/Panorama Bar, Corsica Studios, Boiler Room x Primavera Sound Barcelona, Dekmantel’s Lente Kabinet & Selectors Festivals and more across Europe & the United Kingdom. Phreaker Fighter*** Hailing from Oklahoma, Phreaker Fighter is a fresh face in Portland’s dance scene who takes great inspiration from the record slinging legends of Chicago and Detroit. An obsessive crate digger, her sets are filled with soulful, funky, jazzy, and obscure gems spanning the past 6 decades of underground dance music history.
