THE BEST THING YOU CAN DO FOR YOUR ART CAREER is tell people about it. Opportunities grow when people begin to imagine your work in shows or in their collections. Part of that is images, so Instagram and websites are important, but equally important is making people want to look at those images. That's where talking about your work comes in.
This month at First Tuesdays, we're going to share strategies and approaches to VERBAL COMMUNICATION ABOUT VISUAL ART. It might be a 20-second answer to "what kind of work do you do?" at an opening, or maybe you've been asked to give a formal artist's talk with slides. Whatever the situation, you need to be prepared to speak without a lot of "uh, well I don't really know how to describe..." You have to know how to describe.
If you're just getting used to talking about your work, THIS EVENT IS FOR YOU. If you're a seasoned pro who can capture a room full of monkeys with your description, this event is where you can help others. Most of us are somewhere in the middle, and we'll benefit both ways. We are our own experts this time.
FIRST TUESDAYS at Todd's is a free monthly event series at 6:00 pm on the first Tuesday of each month, at LONG GRAIN FURNITURE, which is the studio of artist and furniture maker Todd McCollister. Each event is different; past events have seen guest speakers, panel discussions, round-table discussions, or no format at all. The main idea is to share our experiences and grow a stronger artist community, so before and after the more formal part, we'll have some time for mixing and mingling. All events are FREE and OPEN to the public. Please share with anyone you think might be interested.
Support for the series, so we can defray some costs, is provided by folks like you, through PATREON. If you can, please consider becoming a patron, at
