The Vision Class: A Martha’s Vineyard Legacy follows a group of young men from New York City as they journey to Martha’s Vineyard with two visionary educators, where a powerful Black legacy lives in land ownership and community, and an unexpected personal invitation from President Obama becomes a bridge to hope.
The Vineyard has always been a place where history breathes, legacy lives, and the aspirations of generations whisper from porches, beaches, and church pews. That quiet courage created a unique culture of belonging and a deep well of intergenerational wisdom. As author and historian Richard Lewis Taylor reflects in the film, Martha’s Vineyard became what America could be: “a cultural community like no place else,” shaped not by privilege, but by perseverance, vision, and the humble purchase of tiny cottages without heat. Over time, these spaces became sanctuaries — nurturing civil rights movements, artistic awakenings, and civic imagination. From that soil grew not only heritage but also hope.
These young men - many of whom have never left their neighborhoods - begin to grasp what people across all backgrounds long to understand: their past, their place, and their power to shape the legacy they live, not just the one they’ve been handed.
