The Nunda Historical Society presents a Nunda Native Heritage Workshop : "Lacrosse - The Creator's Game" by Perry Ground.
A sport that is growing in popularity around the world, and has been added to the Olympics, was created right here in the Genesee River valley. Hundreds of years ago, the Seneca and other Haudenosaunee (historically known as the Iroquois) Nations played a game they called dewa•e:o, which means "they bump hips". Today, this popular sport is known as Lacrosse.
Join Perry Ground (Onondaga, Turtle Clan and former player/official) to learn about the origins of this great game and the cultural significance to the Haudenosaunee. Participants also will have the opportunity to practice some of the basic skills of the game including cradling, scooping, passing, catching, and shooting. All equipment will be provided, including sticks and "safe, indoor" lacrosse balls, although participants are welcome to bring their own stick. This session is open to all ages, both girls and boys, and no prior experience is needed; beginners are encouraged to come learn about this fast, fun, and historically important game!!
The workshop is FREE and OPEN to the public. Participants must pre-register before the day of the event. The two hour workshop will be followed at 11:30 by a storytelling session by Perry - no registration is needed for this part of the morning. To register or for more information you can call or text 585-465-0971, send a message to the Nunda Historical Society on our Facebook page, or email us at
