Carol Shumans will be demonstrating her Alcohol Ink painting technique at Gallery North, 9 Eagle Street, North Adams, MA. This free event will start at 6pm on Friday, August 22; refreshments included.
From the artist: My work emerges from a primal connection to the natural world, an intimacy with earth, light, water and memory that possibly has a sense of the ancient and divine. This connection is something that sustains me and can hold me in what could be considered a joyful, existential embrace. It is within this communion of imagining, singing, dancing or occasionally just being quiet, that many of my ideas germinate.
I may begin with a place or image, with the textures, colors, shapes or landscapes of the hills, clouds, or something as subtle as the shifting light on leaves and roots. Sometimes, the paint itself just guides me into something so intriguing it takes shape on its own. Then I look for images in it.
Color is a language that informs my work. Certain palettes awaken memories or imagery that flow into my compositions. I am enamored with images of clouds and water that serve as metaphors for my life.
While painting, I am in conversation with textures, colors, shapes, memories and imagery that are known and unknown. Most pieces become a dialogue between the seen, imagined or felt. It is a way to trace my place in the natural order of things and to something greater than myself.
