In this grave new world, Cyprus faces severe shared threats from violence, climate change, economic instability and inequality, racism, and hatred. And most of all the threat of partition. Deadly wars and the horrific genocide against Palestinians are part of the emerging multipolar world. These existential risks compel us to reinvigorate our efforts for inter-communal cooperation for reunification, and urgent action for solidarity against racism, environmental destruction, and demilitarisation.
The Bi-communal Peace Initiative United Cyprus invites eminent South African/Cypriot sociologist and activist Ari Sitas to discuss, with an audience of activists and academics, the current conjuncture of the Cyprus problem and the prospects for reconciliation.
Our speaker: Ari Sitas is an Emeritus Professor of sociology and political philosophy at the University of Cape Town. A prominent anti-apartheid activist and artist, he served the cause of reconstructing post-apartheid South Africa from many posts. He is a senior fellow and research associate in a number of institutions, including the University of California, Berkeley, Ruskin College and Oxford University. He is a past president of the South African Sociological Association, a Vice-President of the International Sociological Association and was an Executive member of the African Sociological Association. He was a founder member of Junction Avenue Theatre Company and received numerous accolades for artistic works, including an Olive Schreiner Award for their play Randlords and Rotgut. He is a celebrated poet and has held numerous prestigious positions, including a Fellowship at the Institute of Advanced Studies, Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), New Delhi and a Guest Professorship at the Albert-Ludvigs University of Freiburg and was awarded the inaugural Bhagat Singh Chair at the Centre for Historical Studies of JNU.
