About the Book:
When a new lake moves in, flooding the Delaware River Valley, "Old Nate" Isaac is forced to move from his shack out in the country to the small town of Meriden, Kansas. A feisty woman named Lila McCabe becomes curious about him when someone sends her to his doorstep.
Through homemade food and friendship, Lila earns Old Nate's trust. Soon, she discovers his ties to a family who met a mysterious end. Nate was a childhood friend of Genevieve Hurley, the 41-year-old schoolteacher at the heart of the story, and has carried a torch for her ever since.
In the aftermath of a farmhouse fire that claimed the lives of Jennie, her father and youngest brother in 1923, questions and rumors swirl. Soon, investigators learn that she was engaged to at least two men at the same time. No one can find her many diamond rings, and it appears the fire was no accident.
One hundred years later, people continue to speculate. Was Jennie in the farmhouse when it burned, or did she somehow escape?
